Has anyone been keeping their New Year's resolution? Did you complete it? My resolution was to de-clutter my home. I've been reading about it, but learned so much more by doing it. For instance, I'm in the process of de-cluttering my family room. It is more of a challenge than I expected. Since it's the second most popular room in the house (kitchen is #1), daily life stunts my decluttering efforts. Nonetheless, I carry on.
Last week, I began a vlogging series about my decluttering efforts. In my first video, I got an answer to, how do you define clutter, that I didn't expect. So I thought I'd put it out into the blogisphere and add a question as well.
So, how do you define decluttering? And how do you declutter?

I like to de-clutter by going through everything, but have found it is easier to do a chunk at a time . Otherwise, I get overwhelmed! I have been working on this project for over a year now. Last year I gave away a set of dishes, that I didn't need. and just kept a mixture of everyday dishes that don't match. I don't have a lot of company and felt it wasn't necessary to have a large dish set for just me. I am learning to do with less and really like the extra space I have to spread things.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I do find decluttering is exhausting - mostly mentally. So do you still wish you had those dishes? Sometimes when I get rid of something I fear I'm going to miss it. So far, I can only think of one thing and really I still tell myself I didn't need it. It was just holding on to my past.
DeleteI'm a huge fan of de-cluttering. My son moved into his own apartment last year so that was a huge decluttering moment for us. We had a lot of stuff in storage that we had forgotten about. We gave him all of the furniture that was there to use in his apartment and threw the rest away. I try to stay on top of things and not let mail and magazines pile up (although it doesn't always work!)
ReplyDeleteI agree with Becky that it's easier to do it in sections to avoid getting overwhelmed.
I suppose I'm doing sections but very large sections (room by room). Reading these posts I'm thinking as humans we just need to break it down into chunks of what we can handle or have a task list.
DeleteOh and congrats on your son moving out! :) I am and not looking forward to that day :)
Have you tried setting a goal of number of bags dealt with each week/month, whatever? One of the people I follow on Twitter posted about 40 bags in 40 days. The idea is to fill one black trash bag each day for 40 days. We're not quite managing that, but we thought 2 a week might work. So far, so good!
ReplyDeleteThat is an awesome - my problem is that I'm learning that it's not just de-cluttering, it's finishing small projects, finding homes for things I use quite frequently, general cleaning and making the room work for me. I will consider a big black back a month - for each room I'm working in but I don't think I have the energy for one a day. I'd probably spend the whole day looking for "stuff"
DeleteI really need to declutter my house! I think my worst spot is my partially finished attic which still has boxes from in it from when we moved here 12 years ago. I'm thinking I don't need anything in them!!!
ReplyDeleteYeah, there comes a point where you want to just throw it out and not look inside. I've got "stuff" that's been boxed up for about 5 years now. I know I will go through it but I wish I had the will power to just throw it out.
