Weekend Raking

I've decided to consolidate my blogs and bring my old blogs to this one.  So Thurs/Fri blogs will be my oldies but still relevant blogs.  This article I wrote an year ago and it fits in with my 7 ways to Distract a Digital game obsessed kid that I wrote earlier this week.

Allowing the kids to make a fire is always a plus during our weekend raking

Saturday was spent gaming.  Not me, my kids.  Drove me nuts.  Such a beautiful day and they stayed indoors.  Even when I told them they had to get off electronics for a couple of hours they spent those hours indoors.  So Sunday morning, they raked.  I know it seems like punishment but really it's a family event.  DH cut up the branches left behind from Hurricane Sandy.  My girls raked and I filled the bags.

A great way to get exercise and to get outdoors

I've gotten into the habit of starting a fire in our fire pit while the girl rake up their piles.  Here and there everyone adds sticks, twigs, logs and stand for a couple of minutes by the fire to warm their hands.  When the raking is complete, we roast marshmallows.

They got sun, they got exercise, they got fresh air and they got marshmallows.  Yes there was some complaining and they took frequent breaks but the benefits far outweighed the frustrations.

  1. I can remember when our children were younger we all had to out and rake leaves. It really wasn't that bad. We were sharing tie together, laughing alot. Everything you is making memories and they are ones I will not forget. Interestingly also my children bring it up from time to time.

    1. That's where my surprise came - it was more pleasant than I though it would be. I suppose the combination of being outside and getting a little exercise - rather then sitting in a dark house with the computer monitor as light and nothing moves but your fingers gets you in a good mood without even knowing it.

  2. The great part of raking leaves is running and jumping into the pile of leaves. It's a payoff for all the hard work you've done.
